Let's say you have millions in Monero and you want to bury it across multiple locations in multiple countries in case things go wrong. First you should do what I advocate in other articles: create a Whonix VM with the full Monero blockchain, put all of that into a VeraCrypt container, and store the container on a 512 GB flash drive. 512 GB because the blockchain is 250 GB, Whonix is around 10 GB, and you will need additional space when you sync it again perhaps years later.
Here is how I would pack the USB drive. Needless to say, do all of this with gloves on so you do not get your fingerprints or trace DNA on it.
- Place the USB drive inside an anti-static bag to protect it from static discharge and direct contact.
- Put the anti-static bag into a mylar bag, add one small silica gel desiccant packet beside it, and heat seal the bag while leaving a small amount of air inside. Mylar is used because it becomes airtight when heat sealed, has extremely low moisture permeability, and is stable for long-term storage.
- For redundancy, place the sealed mylar bag into a second mylar bag, add another small silica gel packet, and heat seal it. This second layer protects against seal failure or punctures.
- Place the final sealed packet inside a Pelican case.
- Add a piece of stainless steel inside the Pelican case, for example a small plate or block a few inches wide. This is included so the buried container can be reliably located later using a metal detector. Stainless steel is preferred because it resists corrosion and will remain detectable over many years underground.
- Cut closed-cell polyethylene foam to fit the inside of the Pelican case. Create a snug cavity in the foam so the sealed packet sits securely, and place additional foam around it to prevent any movement. Closed-cell polyethylene foam is used because it does not absorb water, does not rot, and remains stable long-term even in damp conditions.
- Ensure the stainless steel piece is also secured within the foam and not pressing directly against the sealed mylar bags.
When you go to a wooded area to bury it, do not take your phone with you as law enforcement can obtain your location data and potentially figure out where you buried it.
Try to bury it in a dry area at around 4 feet deep.
