Homeless people should be given homes or sent to prison if they refuse

There is a common misconception that homelessness is solely due to a lack of housing. However, this is not entirely accurate. Many individuals who are habitually homeless, particularly those living on the streets in areas like Skid Row, suffer from mental illness and/or drug addiction. These individuals often prefer living on the streets in urban areas over moving to temporary or permanent housing in the suburbs.

This preference is not because they lack housing options, but rather due to the convenience of their current location. In downtown areas, it is easier to panhandle for money, engage in the trade of stolen goods, and maintain connections with drug suppliers. Moving to temporary housing would require them to commute downtown several times a day for these activities, making their lives more difficult.

Given this reality, I propose that all homeless individuals be moved into permanent housing, or temporary housing if permanent options are not available. This housing would consist of studio or one-bedroom apartments for single individuals. If a person refuses this housing, they should face consequences: a one-year prison sentence or, if they are severely mentally ill, indefinite placement in a psychiatric facility.
